Research into Other Album Covers
Design Ideas
After getting some feedback and discussing our preliminary designs, we decided that we liked the idea of the reflection as it's able to show other areas and elements of his lifestyle which we are representing. That is why we thought we could incorporate the reflection in the sunglasses. So this was the idea which we decided to go for when creating the final cover of the digipack.

We came up with this design for the back cover. It is quite simplistic but implies quite a lot. Firstly the barcode on the back of his neck implies he has become de-humanised by the industry and that he is almost a product and symbol of commercialism that rules the world of music. The composition of the shots can allow the digipack to have a front and back, as a result with the two main designs you have the front of the head and face on the front cover and the back of the head on the reverse.

Our Magazine Advert
Another part of our ancillary texts is a magazine advert. To do this we decided to analyse the advert which was used to promote Plan B's album 'The Defamation of Strickland Banks'. (This can be seen below)
After which we then designed a couple of our own magazine adverts, incorporating traditional elements such as the artists name, the name of the song, a picture of the artist which is also commonly found; the names of the recorded labels the artist is signed to and other elements such as reviews from other magazines and newspapers. We decided to go for a brick wall background as this gives a rough and rugged impression which contradicts the glamour of a pop star. Also the wall allows us to use the font and imagery in certain ways. For example we have used the typography in a bold way to stand out yet it gives the illusion that is peeling off the wall, this implies it has been there too long which correlates the name of the single. Also the transparent, stylistic mural type image we created on the wall suggests that there is transparency in the world of music and people aren't as genuine as they seem. Many of them become encompassed in the role of a celebrity and abuse this power for personal gains. All in all the advert is dynamic and eye catching which is what the advert is intended to do. We have also added the QR code which would allow the reader to scan it with their phone and preview the video and song on a smart phone. The wall type style which we used is also incorporated into the digipack to add continuity through the different media texts and promotional materials. |
Magazine Advert Analysis
This is an advert from a newspaper advertising Plan B’s new album ‘The Defamation of Strickland Banks’. The colour scheme is quite simple with 3 main colours, black white and red. These colours make the advert feel quite elegant and stylish. Yet the red is eye catching and contemporary. The use of a monochrome image of Plan B singing shows the artist and is used to promote him. You can see an old 1980’s microphone, this gives an idea of the time and that it is set a couple of decades ago. It is also used as a style icon and helps set the tone and imply older less modern genre of music like soul. You can see in the lower left an image of the cover, this is useful as it shows the audience what to look for when they go an buy the album. There are also ratings from reputable magazines, this helps to add credibility to the ad and makes people more likely to buy if they see good ratings. The typography used is quite simple, most likely ‘Impact’ font, and is all in capitals. This suggests that its designed to be eye catching and stand out when flicking through the paper or magazine. Over all the colours are simple to create a modern stylistic feel and suggest sophistication which is again far away from that of his previous album. |

Promotional Website
We also decided to create a promotional website which advertises the new song and video.
Then we incorporated this into the magazine advert by generating a Quick Response (QR) code, this will allow people who read the magazine advert to view the mobile version of the website on their phone when they can the QR Code.
