Audience
Plan B’s audience originated from the subculture of underground hip hop music. This age group was mainly a young age, from early teens to early adulthood. It was much more related to the ‘ladish’ culture.
Due to the change in musical style Plan B now appeals to an older demographic and more mainstream listeners. He has become more popular.
Mainstream Culture
Definition: “Mainstream” is the common thoughts of the human majority. By mainstream culture, we mean, products in different formats (media, fashion, music) that appeal to the majority.
John Storey argues in his book “ Cultural Theory and Popular Culture that there is a political dimension to popular culture; that popular culture is “a site of struggle between the 'resistance' of subordinate groups in society and the forces of 'incorporation' operating in the interests of dominant groups in society”.
Audience Growth
The song “Kidz” was released in 2005 and gained an underground following amongst younger hip-hop fans due to Plan B’s rapping and controversial lyrical content. But as the song was too extreme to be broadcast on radio and there was not a music video, it did not reach a more mainstream audience.
